Movie Theater App Case Study

As my first project in the Google UX Design Certificate program, I explored the essential stages of the UX design process, focusing on user research, wireframing, iterative user feedback, and mockup development. The goal was to create an informed design solution that effectively addresses user needs. In this case, it was a new movie theater app that solved common user pain points.

 

 

Primary research

I began by conducting user research through my film club to gather insights on target users, their behaviors, and the challenges they face. Though my findings were helpful, I believe I would have found more insights and ideas had my questions be more open-ended.

 
 

Personas

I created several user personas to represent different groups of users for this app. These personas show the various perspectives and needs of the user base, helping us be more inclusive.

 
 

User journey map

Edwin needs to simply purchase a movie ticket, and be able to easily locate it after completing the transaction. I’ve analyzed what his actions, tasks, and feelings would be, and how to improve on the experience.

 
 

Paper wireframes

After gathering a variety of user personas and relevant data, I took the time to draft up some initial wireframe ideas on paper. This process included creating various iterations of the homepage to thoughtfully decide which elements were the most necessary and effective for enhancing user experience.

 
 

LoFi wireframes

Once I felt comfortable with the initial designs, I then proceeded to translate the paper wireframes into a digital format using Figma. This transition allowed me to refine the layout and enhance the visual elements effectively.

 
 

Usability study

Using userinterviews.com I set up my first tests with unmoderated usability study. I had 3 participants answer my questionnaire while navigating through the low fidelity prototype.

Learnings

I didn’t get the best amount of data from my research efforts, since I conducted an unmoderated usability study with only 3 participants. It was also somewhat difficult to read their initial reactions and eye movement, which limited the depth of my observations. I did, however, manage to gather some valuable insights regarding potential new features that could be added to improve the overall user experience.
